Overtime rules differ by country and employer — set the thresholds above to match yours.
How it's calculated
Each day's hours above the double-time threshold are double time; hours between the daily threshold and the double-time threshold are overtime; the rest are regular. Then, for the week, any regular hours beyond the weekly threshold are moved into overtime too — hours are never counted twice.

See the AppWhat this calculator does
Enter time in, time out, and any unpaid break for each day of the week, and this works out your actual hours worked, splits them into regular, overtime, and double time based on the thresholds you set, and totals your gross pay if you enter an hourly rate. It also handles overnight shifts automatically — if your clock-out time is earlier than your clock-in time, it assumes the shift crossed midnight.
How to use it
Fill in each day you worked — leave a day blank if you didn't work it. If your employer pays overtime after a certain number of hours in a single day, set the daily threshold; if there's a separate double-time rate after an even longer day, set that threshold too. Both are optional — leave them blank and only the weekly threshold (40 hours by default) determines overtime. Add your hourly rate to see gross pay calculated automatically.
Understanding the "no double counting" logic
A tricky part of overtime math is making sure the same hour never gets counted as both daily overtime and weekly overtime. This calculator handles it in two steps: first, each day's hours are split into regular/overtime/double-time based on that day alone. Then, after totaling the whole week, if your regular hours still exceed the weekly threshold, the excess is moved into overtime — not added on top of it. Worked example: work Monday through Friday at 8 hours a day (40 hours total, no daily threshold set, so none of it is daily overtime) — that's exactly at the 40-hour weekly threshold, so none of it becomes overtime either. Add a 4-hour Saturday shift, though, and total regular hours become 44, which is 4 hours over the weekly threshold — so those 4 hours move into overtime, even though no single day crossed a daily threshold.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is assuming overtime rules are the same everywhere — they vary enormously by country, state, and even by individual employment contract. Some places have no legal overtime requirement for certain job types; others mandate overtime after 8 hours in a single day regardless of weekly total. Set the thresholds here to match your actual situation rather than relying on the defaults. A second common mistake with overnight shifts is forgetting to check that the break deduction is reasonable — a 30-minute break on a long overnight shift is normal, but a break longer than the shift itself would produce a negative (and nonsensical) result, which this tool prevents by flooring hours at zero.
Frequently asked questions
How does it handle overnight shifts?
If your clock-out time is earlier than your clock-in time, the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours before working out total hours — a 22:00 to 06:00 shift is correctly treated as 8 hours, minus any break.
Can the same hour count as both daily and weekly overtime?
No. Each day is split into regular/overtime/double-time first, then the week's regular hours are checked against the weekly threshold — any excess moves into overtime rather than being added on top, so no hour is ever counted twice.
Are the overtime thresholds legally accurate for my country?
They're fully editable because overtime rules vary by country, state, and employer — set the daily, double-time, and weekly thresholds to match your actual situation rather than relying on the defaults.
